About

Lone Larsen is an innovative conductor with strong musical integrity.

As a professor in choral conducting, she is a role model for young conductors. She continues to challenge existing concert forms with the aim of engaging the audience and she invites all singers and musicians to a creative, playful platform of making music.

Lone Larsen is the founder and artistic director of the vocal ensemble VoNo, (f.k.a Voces Nordicae) a group of 12 professional singers that has cultivated a unique stage presence since its inception in 1999. Through improvisation, interaction with the audience and surprising programming, VoNo continues to push the boundaries of the choral genre. Their unique approach has made them a highly regarded ensemble for contemporary choral performance in Europe.

Lone Larsen is regularly engaged for concert projects both nationally and internationally. She collaborates with renowned professional ensembles, including DR Vokalensemblet (Denmark), the Swedish Radio Choir, Pro Coro Canada, ORCAM Madrid, Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble and the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir – with whom she served as chorus master in 2008–2009. In Norway, Lone has been the artistic director of the ensemble Vokal Nord, with a focus on music influenced by joik/ sami music and baroque music, from 2012- 2015. Lone also serves as a jury member at international choral and conducting competitions including London International Choral Conducting Competition and The Eric Ericson Award.

Over the past 25 years, Lone has combined her deep musical knowledge, artistic integrity and extensive experience teaching group improvisation. She has developed a unique methodology involving creative co-creation that empowers the singers and the audience to go beyond their comfort zones. Through teamwork, communication and creating a safe space, she empowers people to reach their full potential in groups. The result is a cumulative expression of the best of each person combined. This has made her a highly sought-after leader of masterclasses and workshops.

Human connection and sustainability are two core values that have shaped Lone’s career. These principles are evident in her work with VoNo as well as in her role as an educator at Conducting 21C, an international course hosted by the Eric Ericson International Choral Centre, equipping choral leaders with tools for combining artistic excellence and social justice. She is a returning faculty member at Choral Art at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity (Canada), a program designed to inspire and educate composers and conductors in the creation of new, innovative choral music. She has a deep interest in collaborating with composers in creative processes to shape the choral music of today.

Lone has served as chorus master, conductor, and artistic project leader for various productions at Folkoperan in Stockholm, where her passion for inclusive and groundbreaking vocal stage performances found a natural home. Notable projects include Having a Voice, which brought together Roma EU citizens and professional singers on stage, and Calling Home, in which Syrian musicians shared their stories through music and song.

In 2017 Lone was appointed professor of choral conducting at Marie Cederschiöld University in Stockholm where she has educated the next generation of conductors and church musicians from 2008 – 2024. There she also led an interdisciplinary artistic research project on vulnerability, culminating in the performance of The Little Match Girl Passion.

Born in Denmark (1973), Lone holds a degree in music education from the Royal Academy of Music in Aalborg, DK and has been based in Sweden since 1998. In 2000, she earned a Master diploma in choral conducting from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and during 2005-2007 she completed additional studies in orchestra conducting and orchestration at The Juilliard School of Music in New York. In 2003 Lone was selected as one of the conductors in the first Eric Ericson Award and in 2008, she was honoured as Choir Conductor of the Year by the Association of Swedish Choral Conductors.
